Norman’s Kisses~Hand To Paw Cream and Chapstick

Homemade Chapstick & Hand Cream

My name is “JoAnn” and I am a chapstick addict! Gambler and Glory are chapsick addicts too!

Gambler and Glory are the first dogs that I’ve had that are in love with my chapstick. I can’t leave my jacket’s hanging on any chairs as they will try and dig in the pocket to get the chapstick out. This day Gman tipped over the chair trying to get at the goods. My keys have a chapstick attached to them also and they will jump on the counter to get my keys to get at the chapstick.

Give me the chapstick!

Gambler and Glory have eaten more tubes of chapstick then I can count on my two hands, for this reason I started looking into making it myself and seeing if I could save any money. I am buying chapstick on a monthly basis, at times I will by 6-8 tubes at a time and at $2-3 a tube it adds up quick with the chapstick mongers at home.

Video of Gman vs Chapstick

I did my research on Pinterest on different recipes and this is what I came up with.

Let’s get this party started!

Chapstick ingredients.

1.5 oz Beeswax

2.5 Tablespoons Olive Oil

2.5 Teaspoons Coconut Oil

2.5 Teaspoons Shea Butter

1/4 Teaspoons Vit. E

20 Drops Pepperment Oil

If you want the chapstick harder add more beeswax add less of the oils & shea butter, if want it softer add less of beeswax and  more of the oils & shea butter.

Double Boiler to melt the ingredients.

Melt ingredients, test consistency then then fill tubes.

Let stand until set.

Cap and label.

Norman’s Kisses LipBalm

– Put about a inch of water in a pan and bring to a mild boil.

– Put solid ingredients in glass bowl/measuring cup place into pan so it creates a double boiler effect.

– Stir ingredients as it is melting, taking caution that the steam will become hot and the bowl will become hot.

– Once solids are melted (if use pelleted beeswax it will be about 10 minutes, if use block beeswax it will take 20-30 mins) add olive oil and vit e.

– Mix well time to check consistency if you want to by putting a spoon in mixture and taking out a small amount. Place spoon in freezer for a small amount of time take out and try out.

– If consistency is good add flavoring oils at this time, mix well and then fill chapstick containers using a pipette or dropper.

– Let stand and when firm cap and label.

Hand Cream ingredients.

Double boiler effect to melt ingredients.

Once melted fill containers.

Filled containers.

Before set completely can engrave.

Norman’s Kisses Hand to Paw Cream

3 oz Beeswax

3 Tablespoons (2.5oz) Coconut Oil

3 Tablespoons (2.5oz) Sweet Almond Oil

1/2 Teaspoon Tea Tree Oil

1/2 Teaspoon Vit. E

Can be used on your hands or on your pets paws, nose or elbows.

The above recipes made 15 tubes of chapstick and 3 tubs of hand cream.

Where I got my ingredients, containers and tips I learned from making.

Beeswax: Pellets – Amazon, Block (16oz) – Hobby Lobby or  Bulk Apothecary

Vit E, Tea Tree Oil: Liquid 2-2.5oz – Walgreens

Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Peppermint oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Lavender Oil: Amish Store

Chapstick containers: Bulk Apothecary

Hand Cream containers:  Hobby Lobby

Tips: Much easier to use beeswax pellets but if use block need a kitchen scale to measure out chunks you cut off. To cut I found it much easier to run a big knife under hot water and dry off then cut otherwise it took forever to try and get through it. I used a 1 cup measuring cup but if going to make a bigger batch I would get a 2 cup measuring cup so have more room to stir without spilling ingredients over. I would designate a old pan and measuring cups and spoon to stir because even after washing really good you can feel a slick creamy film on the stuff used. I liked being able to use liquid vit e vs capsules as I didn’t have to cut and squeeze the liquid out. If want to add color to lip balm chip off some lipstick into mixture while melting. Add the fragrance oils last so the fragrance holds up, the longer you cook the smell will dissipate.  If heat up shea butter to hot it will become grainy when set. I kept the melted liquid in the pan of boiling water as I filled the containers to keep it from setting up while I was filling. Need to use a pipette instead of pouring using the measuring cup spout as I tried that and the liquid ran down the outside of the cup. Once the chapstick sets you can top it off to fill up the tube as it will settle and have a indentation in the middle.

Cost of chapstick not including my time .38, handcream $2.09

This was a fun easy crafty project that I will keep doing. I’ve had great feedback from the girls at work who sampled both products.

I want to say thank you to Susan over at Talking Dogs for coming up with the name for this batch. I posted up on Facebook that I needed a name for my stuff and she came up with: Norman’s Kisses. What a beautiful name!

Now the fun stuff a Giveaway. I’m giving away 3 sets of hand cream and chapstick.

This N That On A Thursday Barks And Bytes

I’ve been seeing these beautiful custom paintings by Lauren Hammack from Off The Wall Paintings floating around social media. Little did I know my pals at #chewy, @chewy had a surprise delivered to my door yesterday.

Oh boy what do we have here?

MK racing in to see if it is for her.

Is it for me?

Nope MK it’s for the brown dogs, your not brown!

It’s the SS gang in their Christmas hats.

A close up with a lovely note.

The note thanked me for being so awesome and being a part of the blogging family. Really is the awesome ones. I will hang this canvas portrait in pride and smile every time I look at it. Off the wall paintings did a beautiful job painting the brown dogs and capturing their essence. I remember the photo shoot I did last Dec where the gang wore their bandannas and hats, it was a fun shoot and the pictures were great, I now have a beautiful painting to remember that day by.

Here are some random photos from a couple of our walks last week.

Weed laying Glory. She thinks she is back in the wheat field in Canada.

Glory and her wood.

Stopped playing with his ball for a picture in the marsh grass.

Snowy nose.

What’s going on over there?

Stop back tomorrow for Fitdog Friday and see the pictures from our woods walk.

How To Stay Fit In Cold Temps~Fitdog Friday

How To Stay Fit In Cold Temps you ask the SS gang? They stay fit by playing with their outside toys when there is snow on the ground and it’s cold outside. When it is cold they don’t think about how cold it is because they are running around playing, chasing, retrieving but most of all playing keep away from the one who doesn’t have the toy. In cold conditions you need to do short periods of play and have them come in to warm up. If it was up to the SS gang they would stay out for as long as they can. You do need to be careful of slippery area’s when playing in the cold and snow.

Here are the pictures of the SS gang’s fun in the snow.

Nellie just loves the puller toy, she will play by herself with it. She will run around with it, she will flip it up and shake it, she will play footsie with it all burning calories as she plays.

Gambler wanted to play with the jolly ball and would race around to keep it away from the girls. Glory did manage to get the other jolly ball so she could have some fun too.

The fun and games continue every Friday with FitDog Friday, the weekly Blog Hop brought to you by To Dog With LoveSlimDoggy and Emma from Mygbgvlife to promote a healthy active lifestyle for pets (and their people, too!). It’s All About MK…No Chessies~Thursday Barks And Bytes

It’s all about MK, MK….No Chessies, It’s all about MK, MK….No Chessies.

Poor MK hasn’t gotten much lime life on the blog so today it’s all about her and not the chessies.

MK loves to hang out outside. I did find out the reason she want’s to be out their is probably to meet up with her boyfriend the striped cat that lives at my brother in laws house. I will see him dart off across the field to the line fence and he is traveling a ways from home so it must be to meet MK. MK also had a abscess last summer so it must of been from him. One of the many reasons to keep your cat indoors but do I listen or does MK? Nope, it’s a do as I say moment and not as I do. She is as photo genetic as the chessies so it’s all about MK today.

A Easy Thank You

Back in December we were told the SS gang was going to get a very special package all the way from France for Christmas. We never got a package from France before nor a prezzie from so far away. Each day we looked and looked for our special package and Thursday last week it finally arrived!

We got a belated Christmas prezzie, I wonder who it is from?

Gambler smell a silvermistygrey pup fur on the package and had to rip into it right away.

We hit the mother load! Wowza!

And who was so nice to send prezzies to us???? Why Easy of course!

The human treats were the best, especially the little big mac. How did Easy know that was my favorite?

Glory sniffing the blue toy.

This smells great I must shake it.

Gman’s not afraid of his masculinity, he picked the pink one.

Nellie thought it was super cool to get a toy from very far away she had to steal the pink one.

Gman taking back his pink toy.

87 seconds later the bomb went off.

Stuffing everywhere’s.

Gambler trying to deaden Glory’s blue toy.

Lookie lookie MK you get a prezzie too!

nom nom nom let me in.

These kitty treats are the bomb, I think I should get all my treats from across the pond.

Now a couple video’s of the toys.

Thank you so much Easy and staff for our great prezzies, they were so much fun. The blue and brown toy are still alive! I also got the best hunting vest for my self. I will show that off later. John said that will be my new little bird hunting vest. John was intrigued by the gifts and looked them all over looking to see if any were in french, he could of cared less about the prezzies just wanted to know what language they were in and try to read it. I on the other hand thought the whole package was very thoughtful and I have some pretty special friends across the pond.

Mischief Monday~Two Mischief’s In One Day

While we were out for some exercise the other day before the deep freeze the gang and I was walking through the pasture to get back home when all of a sudden Nellie stopped, put her nose to the ground and started sniffing the dirt. Of course you can’t do anything without the Gman noticing so off he ran to see what Nellie was doing.

I better see what is in here.

Nellie, if you find a mouse hole you need to check it out.

Nellie, you dig a bigger hole so you can see the mouse.

Hello Mr. Mouse…..are you in there?

Gambler dug to china and no mouse, must of been a old hole.

Next mischief was went we went to feed the pheasants, of course Gambler has to scour the garden in hopes to find his friend the pheasant.

Lookie, lookie what I found in the garden!

I will get you Miss Pheasant!

The pheasant is gaining air.

You can’t fly faster than I can run.

And the slip, the pheasant got the best of Gambler and flew off.

Better luck next time Gman, guess you better be sharper than the pheasant.
