FitDog Friday ~Saskatchewan Day 5 & 6

Saskatchewan Day 5 & 6  is Wednesday and Thursday day 4 & 5 of hunting. Wednesday was a rain day. We couldn’t get into the fields to put our decoys out so we stuck to hunting the pond by the farm house. We put our a couple of duck and geese decoys. We all picked a fence post to sit by and we ended up getting 39 ducks and geese. I didn’t get any photos from the shoot as it was raining and I ended up going back to the farm house with Gambler because I was cold and I am a fair weather hunter. The rest of the gang ended up getting some greater Canadian Geese which were hugh! Glory retrieved a couple of them. When they brought them back to the farm house I threw it for Gambler to see what he would do with it. It picked it up no problem an hauled it across the lawn.

I got it, this is no big deal.

And you all thought I couldn’t do it.

Aren’t these hugh?

The birds.

Thursday was another raining day, this day we went to our friends house and hunted on his pond. Once again I didn’t take the camera as it was raining. John and I both shot our limits of ducks which were 8 a piece. The dogs got their workout as they had to go swim for their retrieves.

Some of you wanted to know what we did with all the meat from the birds. Each year we take the meat to a local butcher and we grind it all into hot sticks or sausage. There is just way to much meat to eat by itself or we make it into stuff.

You also wanted to know why so many white decoys in the field. In bird hunting you have to put out decoys to lure in the birds from above. Birds don’t like to land somewhere’s unless they feel safe by seeing others in that area. You need to put out a lot of white decoys because the fields up in Saskatchewan are so big you need to make it look like there are a lot of birds there to lure in the birds from above. There are millions of snow geese passing through so you have to make it look good to them.

FitDog Friday ~Saskatchewan Day 4

Saskatchewan Day 4 is Tuesday day 3 of hunting. We had 5 guys hunting with 5 dogs retrieving the birds. We didn’t shoot many birds, a total of 16 so the dogs didn’t get much of a work out today except for their mile walk to and from the field.

Here are some photos from our hunt. The big deal that happened today was that John and Glory got 4 White Fronted Geese otherwise known as Speckle Belly Geese. You don’t see very many of these geese so when a couple flocks came flying in John was lucky enough to be sitting in the right spot and Glory got to retrieve them.

John and Glory’s 4 specs.

Glory proud as ever with her spec.

Hi dad, here is your spec.

Gamblers New Job and 2 Tuesday’s Tails

Gambler stayed at my friends house when I went on vacation. He had 11 days of work which to him was fun work. He was doing what he was bred for….hunting, retrieving, more hunting and more retrieving. Justin is a hunting guide for All Seasons Adventures in Wisconsin. This time of year he is duck, goose and pheasant hunting. He takes clients out hunting and on his off days he is hunting with his friends so each day some type of hunting is going on. Unfortunately Justin’s Chesapeake Riley tore her ACL and needed surgery so she is out for the hunting season which left Justin without a pick up dog. Since I was going to be on vacation and Gambler was going to be in his kennel keeping out of mischief I thought he might as well have a job. He fit right in at Justin’s home, his new job kept him busy and tired which meant no mischief was to be had. Here are some pictures of Gambler and his new job.

First hunt was with Glory as pick up dog also.

Mallard retrieved.

Mallard retrieve.

Some nice canvasbacks.

Goose hunt.

Banded goose.

Gambler not being left behind.

Pheasant hunt.

Guarding his birds.

Another pheasant hunt.

He also had a job of guarding Cassie’s office with Riley.

Selfies in down time to show he’s not getting into any mischief.

Extra loving from Danica.

Chesapeakes are known to be one person dogs, that they don’t like to hunt for other people than the person who trained them. Gambler has shown that he can get along well with others and has done a great job listening to Justin and following his direction. He has had many blind retrieves also. Gambler hopefully has learned to trust his handler and realize that this is a team sport and will be better at his hunt tests next year. He sure is getting a lot of experience hunting this fall. This isn’t the end of hunting with Justin either, he will be back with him for more hunts.

Rocky 2

ABOUT ROCKY 2

Rocky is an adult male Chessie who likes to swim and hike. He needs someone who is experienced in the breed or similar breeds. He would be the happiest as an only dog. No cats or small kids. If he was the only animal, kids would be ok, as he has grown up with kids. Rocky needs someone to love him and give him attention and structure.Rocky was co owned by a local breeder who passed away. He comes from very good lines. His co-owners now do not have time for him and really don’t have the knowledge to work with him and give him the space and exercise he needs. Rocky is still with his co-owners.A friend of the breeder is trying to find Rocky a good home. CRROW is not placing this boy nor have they done any evaluation on him.. It will be an owner adoption.

Please e-mail Sue@crrow.org for the contact information.

FitDog Friday~Saskatchewan Day 2

Day 2 of our Saskatchewan hunting adventure was actually Day 1 of hunting. Saturday was getting to the farm house, unpacking, visiting with the folks we rent the farm house from and then scouting to find a field to hunt on the next morning. When you are scouting at night you are looking for field that have snow geese in them. Usually when you find a field with snow geese in them at night the geese will head back to that same field the next morning to feed. They feed morning and night and in the middle of the day they spend their time on the water.

Our day starts out at 3:30 am. We get up, feed the dogs, feed ourselves and then we are off. We get to the field and set up our decoys in the dark. The decoys we set up are mostly silo socks and some shells. The silo socks are in the high hundreds we put out. We then park the trucks a long ways from the field so they don’t spook the geese and we walk back to our hunting spot. The dogs get a ton of exercise twice a day as it can be at least a mile walk to the field and back to the truck. Plus they get exercise with all the retrieves, so they stay fit while on vacation.

5 guys hunting 72 birds

Gambler can’t keep his eyes open after a morning hunt.

I’m so sleepy.
