Once A Mother Always A Mother~Black And White Sunday

Once A Mother Always A Mother

This was proven to me yesterday when Glory was whelping her litter and one little puppy didn’t make it. I was trying to revive the puppy when Nellie came over and started nuzzling the puppy. I knew the little one was gone so I set it outside the whelping box and tended to Glory. Next thing I know Nellie laid down next to the whelping box and started to try and revive the puppy herself. The emotion I witness and felt coming from Nellie is something I can’t explain maybe you will be able to feel it from looking at this picture. Nellie had 3 litters in her breeding career, luckily none of her puppies perished. Her last litter was with the birth of Glory back in December of 2011. Nellie is now going to be 11 and was spayed after the whelp. It doesn’t matter how old she is or that she is spayed you can’t take that motherly instinct away from her. When the puppies cry she perks her ears up, when Glory is outside going potty Nellie is by the box counting puppies and making sure all is well with them. She has been such a good girl during this whole process. I am so blessed to have such a dog and companion during this very exciting time in Glory adventure. Glory is a terrific mom and it’s all because she had the best teacher a student could have. Thank you Nellie for all the joy and help you are giving us.

So sorry for the doom and gloom post but with life there is death. I’m documenting this whole experience for myself and for those who wish to follow along so this is just part of mother nature that we have no control over.

“A Mother’s Love”

A Mother’s Love
Author unknown
A Mother’s Love is like an island
In life’s ocean vast and wide,
A peaceful, quiet shelter
From the restless, rising tide …
A Mother’s Love is like a fortress
And we seek protection there
When the waves of tribulation
Seem to drown us in despair …
A Mother’s Love’s a sanctuary
Where our souls can find sweet rest
From the struggle and the tension
Of life’s fast and futile quest …
A Mother’s Love is like a tower
Rising far above the crowd,
And her smile is like the sunshine
Breaking through a threatening cloud …
A Mother’s Love is like a beacon
Burning bright with Faith and Prayer,
And through the changing scenes of life
We can find a Haven There …
For A Mother’s Love is fashioned
After God’s enduring love,
It is endless and unfailing
Like the love of Him above …
For God knew in His great wisdom
That He couldn’t be Everywhere,
So He put His Little Children
In a Loving Mother’s Care.

  1. It’s heartmelting and my tears are running… it can happen, sure, but it’s so darned sad and to read what Nellie did is so touching…
I’m so sorry that you lost one of the little pups, I hoped so much that something would happen what’s 100% joy…but life had other plans :o( Give the girls a big hug please , they are pawsome :o)

  2. So sorry one puppy didn’t make it. But Nellie’s behaviour was just amazing. Her nurturing instinct, indeed, has remained with her.

  3. It seems like Nellie’s actions were very comforting during the sad time, and how sweet that she is right there keeping an eye on things. That is just so special!

  4. Such a sweet girl, Nellie. And such a sweet story. I’m sorry you lost one of the puppies, but so glad Glory and her babies are doing well.

  5. Oh how sweet and sad at the same time. Our dog Ruby was rescued from a backyard breeder/hoarder and our vet feels she has had many litters of puppies. Recently my daughter was watching a kids’ video and there was the sound of a puppy whining and poor Ruby went searching the house for the puppy in need. Their mothering instincts are always there …

  6. This is so sweet! I once had a cat that would try to care for another of our cat’s kittens. The mother cat had 3 litters when I was a little girl, and we had a young calico kitty that would always try to nurse them (even though she couldn’t). Sorry that you lost one, but I suppose that is the way things go sometimes unfortunately 😦 Nellie is a good grandma!

  7. I’m very sorry one of the puppies didn’t make it and loving that Nellie was trying so hard to bring it back. She was obviously a great Mother. Being there to watch over Glorie’s puppies and help anyway she can is so precious to see.

  10. Hi Gang! Sorry for not being around to comment on all your wonderful puppy posts. We have been reading them while we were away though. Poor little puppy but how amazing that Nellie still has such strong instincts for motherhood. I bet Glory feels very safe to have Nellie grandma helping her watch over the pups…who are all gorgeous, by the way. Congratulations.
